Update: Present situation with suffering and hardship of people.

Present condition in Nepal, conditions on the Indian border at the blockade are quieter but the effects of the blockade on the economy are spreading in catastrophic results for the poor and those most affected by the Gorkha earthquake of last April. Lack of fuel to bring relief supplies to remote areas of the mountains cut off by winter snow and freezing temperatures, has left many destitute without any resources to struggle through until spring. After nine months, there are still an estimated 400,000 people living in tents meant as temporary shelters, many of those in Himalayan villages devastated by earthquake damage and landslides, with no buildings, tools or food supplies to rebuild their lives and survive the winter. People are starving and dying.

Nepal achieved a new constitution in September, but still we are not using it to improve the lives of its citizens. Our government is busy solving the problems of the border dispute and the claims of the Terai. We hardly see anything about the pain of the people. They have been suffering so much.

We are so emotional when we do see this. Staff at the Women’s Foundation have a weekly meeting at our office and yesterday all of our team’s concern was on those people who are dying of hunger and cold. We can see various people on the news without proper winter dress and food to eat. We feel so deeply for those people who are far from the eyesight from all.

Here we have post the pictures of our baby boy and girl who were sheltered in our “Pregnant women and newly born baby “ project. We often visited the women and children who have left our shelter. We go to them for regular check up and furthermore suggestion that a woman and children need in during this period. This time we gave the some winter clothes and sanitary items.
We will share with you as soon as we find any good way to support them. They are seeking for help and rescue.

We are always in need of your suggestions, love and support.

We can make a lot of difference in people’s lives together with you!!

Update: Warm meal at Life Saving Kitchen

We have opened a life saving kitchen in the compound of Women’s Foundation Production Center from last two weeks. Today is the 15th day where we serve to 1418 families very warm meal . In average,1000 people eat in our kitchen daily and over 60% of these children . It is a very hard and sad situation, a very hard and difficult situation following so closely on the all the after effects of the earthquake. But we are happy that we became by some means able to save at least some lives for some days. We could see clearly how very difficult the situation of thousands and thousands of people had become during the time we were away because of a blockade of supplies coming over the border from India.

During our emergency project we could visibly observe Many single mothers, especially poor, non-skilled laborers and their families are in big difficulties. Because of the blockade from India, there is no fuel or products to continue work in shops or construction. Poor labourers cannot find any work. They are penniless and have no food, no gas to cook, no oil, they cannot even find fire wood. Everywhere there are long lasting power cuts and petrol is rationed. Businesses are shutting down and Nepal’s economy is being shattered. Today several women came to share their story with their children. They shared their painful stories with tears. They said that they had not had any food since three or four days before coming to have meal together with WFN. They added more because of this emergency project we have a very warm and delicious meal. They are still worried about the situation After hearing these stories, we feel some how good but still our team will work out into our local community to see for themselves the situation of people and how widespread the emergency is.

We found many poor people who are starving. Several children could no longer go to school because they have no food to eat.. So when we got back to WFN offices, we decided to call a meeting right away. We all shared what we saw in the various areas we had gone to. It was very hard to share such sad situations but out of this we decided to start the life saving kitchen to provide food for poor people beginning the very next day.

So far, we have distributed food to over 15402 families.

In addition with this emergency rescue support we are busy with our regular projects. Here are some of the snaps of people who come across the community for warm meal.

Thank you again for your generous donation and support. We promise to keep you up to date with progress on our activities and programs

Kamala Upreti, General Secretary and Renu Sharma, President of The Women’s Foundation Nepal, have recently been in Europe conferring with our funders and securing new partnerships for our WFN programs. After 26 days of our visit to Switzerland and Germany, Kamala and the president of WFN arrived home to Nepal on the 2nd of December.

The situation of Nepal is getting worst day by day. Nepal is a landlocked country and over 60% of all our supplies and products come through from India. Following political protest by the Madhesi people of southern Nepal, India set up blockades preventing trucks from coming through their border: medical supplies, food, petrol, cooking fuel, everything. After three months of this, the situation for poor and displaced people in Nepal, already so badly affected by the earthquakes of the spring, has become even more desperate.

So far, we have distributed food to over 675 families today. Over 625 people have already registered their name to come to eat in the kitchen but seeing today’s mass we expect it to be double. They need to come to us since they have no fuel to cook with as well as no food. We are going to cook rice, mix vegetables, and dal for these people.
Please spread the word. If you find any other kind hearts who are willing to support, it will be a blessing !!!

Update: Nepal, Struggling and Suffering due to Crises!!!

Last week, we celebrated our second festival called Dipawali. In this festival, we worshiped Goddess of wealth. Along with this, we worshiped Dogs, crow, Cow ,Ox in the form of various gods and goddess. In addition to this, we went to our relatives home and performed various dances and sing at evening. In return, the owner of the homes gave us sweets, fruits and some amount of money as blessings. The final day of this festival is called the brother and sister day where every sister worships her brother keeping him in the circle of mustard oil, putting mala (garland) of Makhmali flower and Dubo grass to pray for long life of her brother. Sisters offer brother Shaguns and in return the brother give their sisters gifts and money. The brothers also put tika to sister and bow her on her feet and assure her to protect her till the end of life.  We have a great time celebrating this festival.

In spite of all these happiness, Nepal is still battling with the blockade that has been made by India. At present, this crisis has reached a new level of intensity. According to news, none of the refueling plants has cooking gas stock due to the embargo imposed by India. According to Nepal LP Gas Industries Association, many gas bullets loaded from IOC’s refinery plants have been stuck in India and there has not been new loading of gas from IOC deopts since last three months.

People are waiting for days in long queues of vehicles, motorcycle, cars, taxis, buses and trucks at the petrol pumps. Top political leaders are holding talks with India officials to make a breakthrough, but an end to the crisis does not look in sight.

Days are getting more worst than before. It has been more than 3 months that education institutions are closed. All we want is a better Nepal and wants to enjoy New constitution which we actually are not been able to do.

We still have hope and pray for better Nepal.

Present Condition of Nepal.

The year continues to bring challenges to the people of Nepal. Since the earthquakes of April and May 2015, in which over 9000 Nepalese lives were lost, sudden legislative change followed by political unrest has triggered instability across the country, particularly with the minority Indian-origin Medhesi peoples of the southern Terai plains bordering India.

After a year of political struggling, three political parties in Nepal finally united to announce a new constitution for Nepal on September 20. There was celebration and happiness in Nepal as this constitution, so long waited for, finally came into existence. However, some minority groups, including the Medhesi people, fear the new regional government areas that have been set up, claiming that they are not well represented in the new system. In Terai District, the Medhesi Front has led political protest and uprisings against the new constitution. In response, The Indian government, claiming to be only concerned with protecting truckers in areas of unrest, has brought deliveries of food and petroleum to a halt at the border to Nepal.

While people in Kathmandu take turns on alternative days receiving rations of gasoline, thousands of trucks carrying food and supplies necessary in this land-locked country are stranded at the Indian border. There has been a complete stoppage of oil supply to Nepal Oil Corporation by India Oil Corporation. Meanwhile, Indian government officials demand that Nepal make changes to its constitution according to their advice.

For the people of Nepal, while governments wrangle, blockade and impede, the suffering of the terrible earthquakes gets magnified. We are facing shortages not only of fuel for transport and cooking, but now of fruits, vegetables .oil and basic needs. People whose only source of income is what they can make by their daily lab our are without work, and facing nights without food. We cannot imagine the life of their children and what they might be facing at this time.

Sarita Chaulagain’s Experience

Sarita Chaulagain came to WFN Shelter from her home in Kavre, Balluwapati after she came to know about the program for pregnant women and newborns from her relatives. Her home and the houses of both her mother-in-law and mother were also destroyed in the earthquake. Her mother-in-law died during the quake. Sarita says:
“My first born daughter didn’t receive proper nutrition growing up and because of this, she has a problem with her leg. I was extremely happy and thankful to WFN because of all the support my daughter received during her stay. WFN provided me the safe and secure shelter with all the facilities needed for me including the medical support, balanced diet, counseling. I think I was blessed. I was even more happy when WFN helped my daughter for her health treatment. Before I came to WFN, I was worried that my second daughter, born at the shelter, would also have the same health problem, but the support provided by WFN helped my baby to grow up healthy. Now my daughter is 2 1/2 months and she is so healthy.“

When Sarita left the shelter to return home to her family she said: “This is my lovely home and I will never forget it and I will come back to meet all the staff of WFN”.
